Second of all, I am super duper excited to see my friend Zoe Simone aka Napalm Bombshell compete in this Saturday's Roller Derby! I've never seen a match in person and have only seen clips on youtube, but what could be more entertaining than girls rollerskating and then violently shoving each other around the rink?

My designer friend Modi of Idom who I met while we were both working at Twinkle by Wenlan is in Thailand at the moment designing her newest collection, so I haven't been able to speak on the phone with her while she is away. BUT I've been keeping tabs on her design process via her new blog .Well as I was being nosey and checking out her travels I saw this bracelet that she just made. I am OBSESSED! Woven sterling silver!!! Oh I can't wait 'til she gets back to the states so I can get my hands one one!

Despite the fact that some thought my Fall '08 print was too "creepy," it's my favorite so far!! (You can't please everyone, right?)

Anyways, a musician friend of mine showed me this Japanese music video of dancing cartoon hands! He also introduced me to Hear Japan where you can download Japanese music, in case you really just have to have this song like I do!!

So here's to all things cute and creepy ;)

Behind the Scenes

For Fall 2008 we delved a little into our dark and eerie side and used dark rich colors like plums, rust and black patents and tone on tone silk screen of black birds and shadow puppets.

So for our Fall 2008 images we decided to creep our way over with the amazingly talented photographer, Andrew Yee, to 23rd and 8th Avenue to the Hotel Chelsea.

The hotel itself is beautiful inside and out, but of course our room was located down a long dark hallway with flickering lights that kind of made you feel like you were in the movie "The Shining" EEK!

The closet where we kept our bags during the shoot was covered with the words "I'm not sorry!! I'm not sorry!" scrawled all over the inside with lipstick! What happened in there?

My consultant of cool, Disco Susi, sent me this gem of a video, Ladyhawke's Paris is Burning.

Not only is this song stuck in my head, but I must say I've been pretty obsessed with all things glittery and sparkly and fire-crackery when designing Spring 2009 ;)

Anyways, I'm gonna watch this video about 12 more times now.

eyelashes galore

So in case you don't know, I have what I like to call a case of serious eyelash dysmorphic disorder. My eyelashes will never be long or thick enough, ever!! (Believe me, if it's in a mascara tube, I've probably tried it.)

That being said these guys obviously had me in mind. Viktor & Rolf's collarborated with Shu Uemura to make these lush, long, winglike falsiese. I just saw these beauties in Numero Tokyo and have been stalking them all day long.

I need these!
I wouldn't even wear them, they are simply little works of art!

Ooh! So I missed this, apparently Garbage came out with a new song and video called "Tell Me Where it Hurts." I absolutely LOVE the look and feel of this video. It's so 1960's Belle de Jour.

So the other day Disco Susi and I were in the midst of one of our Youtube wars...where we e-mail each other back and forth variousYoutube videos... (yes, we do this a lot!) Well, she e-mailed me the music video for "Queer" by Garbage and reminded me of one of my favorite style icons: Shirley Manson. I remember seeing her picture in magazines and wishing I were born a redhead! I also remember going to High School trying to copy that like smoky eye look only to look like I was punched in the eye. Anyways, Shirley's got great style because she's not afraid to be herself!

I was walking around my neighborhood and window shopping, ahem.... i mean doing some"market research" when I discovered these great jewelry pieces by Sabrina Dehoff.

I've seen them a few times in magazines or other blog sites, but never have had the pleasure of seeing them in person.

They are soooo cute!

They are little pendants the size of a quarter or so made from leather and sewn together with a bit of stuffing inside.

My personal favorites are the kitty and bunny mask ones. I need!

I've been really into masks and animal ears lately. Probably just a phase.

I must admit I have been on a non-fiction reading spree, but I recently read Haruki Murakami's latest novel "After Dark" and it's got me back on the fiction train again! He simply yet descriptively paints a hauntingly romantic vision of the twilight hours and follows the adventures of a few night owls as they wander the streets of Tokyo. Anyways I decided to list a few other great fiction novels that I find myself reading over and over every summer.

I went to an open studios tour this past weekend in Chelsea and ventured in the studio of Vadis Turner.
At first I thought "wow are they serving cake in there!" But upon closer inspection, I realized these deceptively yummy treats were all lovingly created from found objects, heirlooms and other everyday objects. I just love all the colors and the materials in her work.

I saw these deliciously gorgeous pieces in the window of a shop in Soho and nearly drooled all over myself right there on the side walk! How cool! Cha-an has to be one of my most favorite places in New York. It's this most fabulous little tea house cafe in the East Village on the second floor, up off the hustle and bustle of the busy street below. My secret pleasure is to get lunch there by myself on a weekday afternoon and bring a nice book to read while I have lunch or sip on one of their many teas. What a treat! And yes, I did take a photo of my meal, and yes people did look at me a little strange and yes that cake is sitting on a teapot shaped dish! Next time you are in NYC be sure to check this place out... yum yum!

Mutant Mythos

One man's trash truly is another man's treasure!

Yong-Ho Ji is a Korean artist currently with a show at Gana Art Gallery in New York and creates this mythical creatures from old tires.

I watched an interview of him and uses several different types of tires in each peace to create the varying textures which are pieced together to mimic the natural curvature and direction of the animals muscular system.

I haven't been able to see this show in person yet, if anyone has seen it please let me know how it is!

Disco Susi is also the mastermind behind all our campaign pictures and look book design.

I would like to say, that I am the proud owner of a Jen Kao creation. My dress from up and coming from this designer is not only beautiful but is absolutely outstanding in it's craftsmanship and detailing. It's like a really great painting or sculpture, it looks superb on and at a glance but upon closer inspection all of it's delicate intricate details become more apparent which makes you only love it more!

Hiroki Otsuka is such an amazing manga illustrator as well as fine artist. I had the good fortune of working with him at the Murakami Studio's in Brooklyn, before he left to embark on his own career as an artist. He was recently in a group exhibition at the Japan Society in New York City, and in fact his illustration was used for the cover of the exhibition catalogue!

Recently we took a studio "field trip" to check out the "Pricked" Exhibit at the Museum of Art and Design in New York City which was devoted to the fine craft of embroidery.

We were all floored by the intricate detailing of all the pieces. The amount of time and detail some of these works required was amazing.

There were so many beautiful pieces but we felt the little embroidered handkerchiefs by Andrea Dezso were our favorites. They were all neatly stitched with her mother's heart-felt yet comical words of wisdom.

Best sketchbooks Ever!

These croquis notebooks are the best notebooks ever made! The paper is thin, crisp and makes that perfect crinkle sound when you turn the page. I found this old one and it has the original Gatsby sketches in it!

FYI, you can get them here at New York Art Central in Manhattan. Just don't buy them all, I need a new one soon!

I learned how to sew from my grandmother when I was little, but when my mom gave me this Kenmore Sewing Machine for my 13th birthday, the electricity bill was never the same!

I would spend hours and hours sewing bags, skirts, dresses, t-shirts, altering my friend's clothes.

You can still see all the fabulous decals I affixed to it to make it a little more "me."

By far the greatest part of this sewing machine is when you start sewing, this strange cut out of my head spins around and around! It makes everyone laugh when they see this.

This sewing machine now resides in our design studios where she is still in use to sew up our first drafts of all of our designs....... well and to hem a jean or two.

So these are some of the original sketches from an old notebook where I was maniacally drawing ideas for a logo. I did zillions of drawings upon drawings upon drawings to perfect this idea in my head. I wanted it to appear as a broken heart at first glance but after a second look, you realize it's really too people kissing! It's like that old optical illusion of a face and a vase.

I LOVE this YSL ad campaign circa 2000! Simple, sleek and sexy. I saw it while a fine arts student in college and it inspired me to do a whole series of kiss paintings and photographs and eventually, my logo :)
